- A Musical Overview of Bret Easton Ellis’ Oeuvre – Though cross-pollination between books and music is an age-old trend, cult novelist Bret Easton Ellis fills his books with more music references than anyone else we can think of, and his works are inextricably woven into the pop culture they portray — partially because it seems like every time Ellis makes a music reference in a novel, a band is making an Ellis reference in a song. We’ve put together a master list of music mentioned throughout his entire oeuvre, complete with streaming playlists so you can fill your day with a BEE soundtrack. We had some help from the official source, but finding that insufficient, went through ourselves and picked out some more of our favorite musical moments and shout-outs throughout the novels.

STAR WARS EP1 3D: So why didn’t Lucas spend his money on remaking this into a good film?
— Olli Sulopuisto (@osulop) February 6, 2012
Arvio Domessa.
HÄRMÄ (FI’12): Western set in 19th C Finland suffers from weak script and the most horrifying color grading I’ve ever seen.
— Olli Sulopuisto (@osulop) February 9, 2012
Arvio Domessa.
KOHTA 18 (FI’12): The film feels like it was influenced by Skins, but I don’t mean the OTT plots but the feeling of veracity. Excellent.

HUGO (US’11) is such a heartfelt love letter to the magic of cinema it’s impossible not to love it. A huge movie that feels very personal.

Arvio Domessa.
THE GREY (US’12): Zero calorie philosophizing and my new favourite Winter movie, despite the obligatory ”taking my gloves off” bits.
— Olli Sulopuisto (@osulop) February 13, 2012
HAPPY END (SWE’11): Runge’s (still) interested in people who are being beaten down figuratively and literally. Gorgeous colour, deep shadows
— Olli Sulopuisto (@osulop) February 15, 2012
HAPPY END: The acting is impeccable as always. Especially liked Ann Petrén, who has a perfectly cinematic face.

KULMAN POJAT (FI’12) has a fun 1st act then boggles down to run of the mill romcom blandness. Many, many, many jokes about cocks big & small
— Olli Sulopuisto (@osulop) February 15, 2012
TÄHTITAIVAS TALON YLLÄ (FI’12): Interwoven stories of 3 generations of women, heavy on theme & light on narrative momentum.
— Olli Sulopuisto (@osulop) February 22, 2012
CHRONICLE (US’12): High school drama segues into ubermench morality. Mostly consistent if somewhat overwrought found footage concept.
— Olli Sulopuisto (@osulop) February 23, 2012
FEMMES DU 6e ETAGE (FR’11): Capitalist exploits, subverts foreign workers &love comes tumbling. Luchini kills in this.
