HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY (NZ+’12): Okay, this will take more than one tweet.
-
.@AkiJorgensen Truth be told I didn’t hate it. It’s more of the same, really. #hobbit
-
Peter Jackson is still of the more-is-more school of thought. Show, don’t tell turns into show *and* tell. #hobbit
-
@osulop ”…more SWep3 than Tintin.” In this comparison, which do you see as more blatant-cgi/cartoony/dated/etc? -
.@AkiJorgensen All are gloriously OTT, but I prefer the Spielbergian approach with a clear through line of thought in every shot #hobbit
-
The Massive mountain battle looks more SWep3 than Tintin. Gandalf’s POV shot made me titter a bit. #hobbit
-
Dwarven make-up doesn’t really enhance subtle acting. #hobbit
-
Martin Freeman does his awkward English thing, which I quite enjoyed. #hobbit
-
There’s definitely a tonal mismatch between the gritty beheading (two by my count) and the fairytale humour. #hobbit
-
I quite dislike the retconning what with Saruman acting all fishy and such. #hobbit
-
Facial animation is more expressive, sometimes maybe even more expressive than the human actors. Funny contrast. #hobbit
-
3D HFR looks like video, especially in closeups. Wide shots aren’t as bad. And why use shallow DOF with stereo imaging? #hobbit
-
@osulop: ”…And why use shallow DOF with stereo imaging? #hobbit” – Because Peter Jackson ain’t no Wim Wenders. #booyah #oldschoolphotography -
.@mondostic Actually my guess is that it’s an (unhappy) byproduct of shooting with a 2D release in mind. #hobbit
-
#Hobbit and 3D HFR: huge cavernous spaces benefit from it (I think), but melee scenes with a free-floating camera and loads of people don’t.
-
@osulop @kallekinnunen Did your eyes adjust to the refresh rate quickly? How irritating it was? -
@Sahhmi @kallekinnunen Close-ups with fast movement look wrong no matter how long you stare at them. IM(H)O. #hobbit
-
.@Sahhmi It does look butt-ugly at times, but that’s them breaks. Subtitles (bright & narrow) create nasty reflections. #hobbit
-
Re: 3D – yes, the audience gets poked in the eye with an arrow or two, but most of the time it isn’t gratuitous. #hobbit
-
One more spoiler for #Hobbit – the hedgehog survives.

- Interview with Django Unchained director Quentin Tarantino – And then I met Jamie and realized I didn’t need to do that. Jamie understood the material. But mostly he was the cowboy. Forget the fact that he has his own horse—and that is actually his horse in the movie. He’s from Texas; he understands. We sat there talking, and I realized, Wow, if this were the 1960s and I was casting a Django Western TV show and they had black guys as stars of those in the 1960s, I could see Jamie on one of those. And that’s what I was looking for, a Clint Eastwood.
