- John Badham on making the finale of Saturday Night Fever – I wanted to shoot this picture in 1:66, because dance is a vertical medium. 1:85 is not the most friendly for dance, but it was the best I could get.
- How machines can help us discover overlooked films – Instead, if you’re seeking patterns among Secret Successes, Fiascoes, and Failures, you’re better off looking at how critics and audiences described a movie.
Heinäkuu on elokuvakuukausista lyhin
THE LONE RANGER (US'13): Should one complain about narrative clunkiness or rejoice about the occasional visual wit? I'm in the latter camp.
— Olli Sulopuisto (@osulop) July 2, 2013
LETTER NEVER SENT (SU'59): I don't entirely understand some structural and acting choices, but talk about goddamn production values.
— Olli Sulopuisto (@osulop) July 3, 2013
BEFORE SUNRISE (US/AT'95): Look at all that overeager flirting/acting. Very Linklater-y discursions into life, the universe & everything.
— Olli Sulopuisto (@osulop) July 4, 2013
BEFORE SUNSET (US'04): The characters are the same, only with "if + past perfect". Some narrative shoehorning needed. Actors excellent.
— Olli Sulopuisto (@osulop) July 4, 2013
BEFORE MIDNIGHT (US'13): Doesn't flow as freely. The narrative is about them as a couple, not them as individuals. Verisimilitude FTW.
— Olli Sulopuisto (@osulop) July 4, 2013
TWO LOVERS (US'08): Indeed. Maybe not quite as devastating as I had led myself to believe, but then again I have the emotional life of a cod
— Olli Sulopuisto (@osulop) July 4, 2013
THE GREAT GATSBY (US'13): A cold mess even in 2D.
— Olli Sulopuisto (@osulop) July 6, 2013
WHAT MAISIE KNEW (US'12): Coogan's sleazebag charm, Moore's rock mom outfits, Skarsgard's puppy look. But that's all.
— Olli Sulopuisto (@osulop) July 10, 2013
BREAKDOWN (US'97): Solid middle-of-nowhere thriller. Now I finally have to see Duel.
— Olli Sulopuisto (@osulop) July 10, 2013
DRUG WAR (CH'12): Out-Heats Heat.
— Olli Sulopuisto (@osulop) July 13, 2013
BEHIND THE CANDELABRA (US'13): A film of many delights: pouting Damon, saucer-eyed Douglas, rigid Lowe, sequins & bulges.
— Olli Sulopuisto (@osulop) July 18, 2013
PACIFIC RIM (US'13): Pretty much a live-action Neon Genesis Evangelion: gorgeous and dumb. (I liked it quite a lot.)
— Olli Sulopuisto (@osulop) July 22, 2013
THE WOLVERINE (US'13): I'd say there's about 3/4 of a good superhero movie in there. Relatively little exposition & action.
— Olli Sulopuisto (@osulop) July 22, 2013
MONSTERS UNIVERSITY (US'13): My second least favorite Pixar film / Every time I see stylized credits, I wish they do a whole movie like that
— Olli Sulopuisto (@osulop) July 25, 2013
SEXY BEAST (UK'00): Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! – Rewatch after 10 years. Not too keen on the crime bits, but it does make me laugh. A lot.
— Olli Sulopuisto (@osulop) July 28, 2013
BLUE JASMINE (US'13): Allen paints a post-Madoff psychodrama not with a wide brush, but a paint roller. Lovely cast feat. puffy Dice Clay.
— Olli Sulopuisto (@osulop) July 30, 2013
KEKKONEN TULEE (FI'13): Tyylilaji asettaa riman korkealle, liian korkealle.

Kuules tätä (animaatiosta ja LiLosta)
Podcasteja ahmiessa korviini kulkeutui (…) pari ohjelmaa, jotka haluan jakaa kanssasi.
Niin, juuri sinun kanssasi!
Ensimmäisessä toimittaja Stephen Rodrick kertoo, miten hän kirjoitti jutun The Canyons -elokuvan kuvauksista (Here Is What Happens When You Cast Lindsay Lohan in Your Movie).
Toisessa puhutaan Warner Bros -animaatioiden taustoja maalanneesta Maurice Noblesta, joka oli aika etevä tyyppi.
Kuul kuul (vai pitäisikö toivottaa kuulos kuulos?)!

- Blood on the screen: Violence, movies and Me – Anyway, violence, the movies, lies. The movies do not tell you that (1) most of the time it's over before you know it happened, (2) that both victim and perp go into a visually uninteresting altered state, a sort of adrenalized dizziness—and if you’re young, a certain uselessness, (3) that muscle cramps and pain and other symptoms just get worse, not better, and that with injury comes swelling and infection, (4) that the strongest men weep, and (5) that nobody ever completely recovers from even the smallest violent act against another human.
